Popcorn is widely consumed in the south of Minas Gerais; however, up to now no specific breeding program for the region has been carried out. Recurrent selection (RS) is a viable alternative for breeding of this crop; nevertheless, it is necessary to frequently evaluate the progress achieved. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to assess the genetic progress obtained after two cycles of RS for the traits of popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY). Cycles one and two of the UFLA - E and UFLA - R populations, the original population (UFLA) and two controls were assessed. The experiment was conducted at the UFLA experimental farm in a randomized block design with eleven replications; ten agronomic traits, including PE and GY, were assessed. Gains... |

The aim of the study was to assess inbreeding depression and determine genetic components in landrace populations of popcorn. Six Brazilian popcorn landraces: Amarelo, Beija-Flor, Branco, Rosa-claro, Roxo and Viçosa, were subjected to self-pollination. Experiments with SO populations and their selfing populations (SI) were conducted in a randomized complete block design. The estimates of inbreeding depression varied from 1.2% (popping expansion) to 79% (grain yield). The gene action was predominantly additive for plant height, ear height and hundred-grain-weight. The dominance genetic effects were important for index of prolificacy and grain yield. The genetic effect of popping expansion was bidirectional with nuil dominance and a predominance of additive... |

Five popcorn varieties were tested for their quality at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center in 2009. The objective is to choose the high potential popcorn variety for sugar-butter flavor popcorn snack as a commercial product. The experiment laid out in RCBD, composed of 5 treatments with 4 replications. The quality under investigation including, popping percentage, expansion volume, flake size, grain moisture, germinal and abgerminal thickness, grain size, flake type, flake color and taste score. The result found that Five stars popcorn, a commercial popcorn variety gave the best quality followed by pearl popcorn composite. It had 98 percent of popping percentage, 37 mg/g of expansion volume, 7.5 ml/grain of flake size, 274 micron of abgerminal... |
